HDMI 1.3 Category 2 greatly expands HDMI’s capabilities from the current and previous versions with increased bandwidth from 165Mhz(4.9Gbps) to 340Mhz(10.2 Gbps) and over 400% higher resolution than 720p. HDMI 1.3 Category 2 also has higher refresh rates (up to 120 Hz) for smoother motion. HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths commonly referred to as Deep Color, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification. The 1.3 Category 2 format also supports a broader color space using next generation “xvYCC” color space technology that can display virtually the entire gamut of colors viewable by the human eye. Next-generation “xvYCC” color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals and HDMI 1.3 Category 2 adds additional support for new, lossless compressed digital audio formats Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™ for theater-like, professional sound quality while correcting lip sync problems as well.Because of the much increased bandwidth capabilities of HDMI 1.3, there are currently distance limitations for 1.3 Category 2 cabling but like it’s predecessor, cable lengths will increase over time.
